Speechless by Hannah Harrington - Author Inteview + Blog Stop

Escapism from Reality, is going to kick off the blog tour of the amazing new book by Hannah Harrington, Speechless. I have been lucky enough to even have the wonderful Hannah over my blog and answer a few questions for me. Her first book, Saving June received great reviews and Speechless being eagerly anticipated by bloggers and readers alike. Let’s quickly dive into the synopsis to remind us all what Speechless is about.

SYNOPSIS

Everyone knows that Chelsea Knot can’t keep a secret

Until now. Because the last secret she shared turned her into a social outcast—and nearly got someone killed.

Now Chelsea has taken a vow of silence—to learn to keep her mouth shut, and to stop hurting anyone else. And if she thinks keeping secrets is hard, not speaking up when she’s ignored, ridiculed and even attacked is worse.

But there’s strength in silence, and in the new friends who are, shockingly, coming her way—people she never noticed before; a boy she might even fall for. If only her new friends can forgive what she’s done. If only she can forgive herself.

Now without further ado I present, the Hannah Harrington.

THE INTERVIEW

As you write many contemporary YA stories are you tempted or have you thought about writing a Fantasy YA book?
Contemporary fiction has always been my first love, and while I appreciate fantasy, I don’t think it is something I will ever write myself. Part of me would love to write a dystopian novel since it is one of my favourite genres, but it takes a certain knack for original world building that I am not sure I can pull off! I am very happy to keep writing contemporary for the moment, though of course that could change in the future. You never know!

Have you ever taken a vow of silence?
I get asked this a lot, but no, I have never taken a vow of silence! I’m not sure how hard it would be for me. I’m not an extremely talkative person, but just getting through the day would be difficult. And sometimes my favorite part of the day is when I get a chance to talk to family members or friends and catch up on how we’re doing, so cutting that down would be a challenge.

Have you always wanted to be an author?
I have always, always loved writing. As a kid people would know me as the girl who writes. When I was ten, we had to write these personal essays for a state standardized test, and the first day of fifth grade, they’d gotten the tests back and I had been the only kid in our class to get the perfect score. I remember really vividly how my teacher read my essay to the entire class as an example of good writing, and I’d never been singled out academically like that before. So it was around then that I really fell in love not just with writing but in sharing it with others.

What you are working on now/next...
I am working on a third novel. It’s too early to go into detail about it, but it will be another contemporary young adult!
